What Is Speedwell Works?
Speedwell Works is a workshop publication about textiles, garments, and repair. It is written from practical experience and built around the idea that most things are discarded long before they are worn out.
Each issue focuses on understanding materials properly so they can be chosen carefully, maintained correctly, and kept in use.
What We Cover
Waste centres are full of things that were barely used. Clothes bought without understanding what they were made from. Jackets discarded because no one knew how to repair them. Equipment replaced when basic maintenance would have kept it going for years.
Speedwell Works is published from a working workshop in England. Each issue explores the history and properties of specific textiles and garments: denim, waxed cotton, linen, ventile, military surplus, workwear. Alongside this you will find practical guidance on repair, care, and getting more from what you already own.
This is not about trends or lifestyle positioning. It is about knowledge. Understanding materials well enough to use them properly and keep them going.
Each Fortnightly Issue Contains
- A detailed look at one garment, fabric, or material. How it was developed, why it was made that way, and what makes it durable.
- A practical repair or care technique. Clear, specific guidance written for people who want to do the work themselves.
- One or two recommendations worth knowing. A maker, a surplus source, a tool, or a book. Selected carefully.
- A short note from the workshop on what is being made, repaired, or sourced.
